Don’t Panic

I’m feeling more than a little fried lately, what between sprained ankles, flat tires, the state of the world and the baffling cooperation of the Democratic party with this madness, this domestic coup. I mean, there’s Burma, a general complaining about immoral gays, the incredible unreality of an impending war with Iran, people trying to justify the loss of their loved ones with the losses of other people’s loved ones.
A friend told me today that the son of the city’s consumer advocate, a nice kid who’d just finished college, had been shot in the neck and was now on life support. “It’s crazy,” he said. “It’s a war out there.”
I think that was when my head just seized up and stopped trying to process any of it. “I can’t take it anymore,” I said to myself. “I can’t read about one more thing. I can’t stand this world, I don’t want to know anything else about it. What on earth are we going to do?”
And it was then that I opened my fortune cookie from lunch. I popped the cookie in my mouth and read the fortune.
It said, “Don’t panic.” I laughed.
So I won’t. Not just yet, anyway.

It’s people like us who are holding this crazy planet together right now, Suze. We don’t get to quit. But we might want to take a vacation…
There IS something we can do: Shut It All Down Starting On October17th.
We’ve tried to get them to listen, they refuse, and mock us. It’s time to take the next step.

Fortune cookie saved the day. Once, I opened mine and my fortune was a blank slip of paper. Must have been predicting the balance in bank account.
“Don’t Panic” hmmmm, don’t forget your towel.
