What A Tangled Web They Weave

When first they practice to deceive:
House Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers Jr. (D-MI) “released an interview with GOP lawyer Dana Jill Simpson implicating former White House adviser Karl Rove in the prosecution and conviction of former Alabama Gov. Don Siegelman (D) on corruption charges,” The Hill reports.
“In a closed-door interview with committee staff, Simpson recalled how Rob Riley, current Gov. Bob Riley’s (R) son, told her about Rove’s role in a plan to prosecute Siegelman if he did not back down from contesting the 2001 gubernatorial election results that handed the office to Riley.”
“According to the transcript, Simpson described a 2005 conversation with Rob Riley, who told her that Rove had contacted the Public Integrity Section of the Department of Justice to press for further prosecution of Siegelman.”

I met Dana Jill Simpson at a Dem meetup a couple of months ago, but all of this was just really getting started and I didn’t realize just how important her testimony would become. Now I wish I had been more up on the Siegelman case and the Rove implications so that I could have asked some questions before she testified before the congressional staffers.
Don Siegelman and his family are suffering because of the illegal and unethical prosecution instigated by Karl Rove. The judge should have recused himself but did not, because he owns a business that receives government contracts in the millions of dollars. The two major newspapers in the state published the Republican Party’s talking points throughout the trial. Mr. Siegelman did not receive any money, and conducted himself in a manner that was similar to other politicians in the state with regard to this case.
This was a DoJ hit job orchestrated by Karl Rove, the Republican Party, and the mainstream media. Justice was not done in sending this man to jail.
This proves once again that Richard Cheney is a corrupt liar when he referred to the DoJ hearings as a witch hunt. There has been criminal intent to use the DoJ as a strongarm agency for the Republican Party. The ruin of Don Siegelman’s life was the republicans first big success at using the law in an unethical manner to destroy a political opponent.
Hopefully, they will pay for their arrogance.
