A very bad national habit with lots of social costs. Why does everyone treat it as though it’s harmless?

You are a Working Class Warrior, also known as a blue-collar Democrat. You believe that the little guy is getting screwed by conservative greed-mongers and corporate criminals, and you’re not going to take it anymore.

Many good points. Especially the part about how it makes people more comfortable with their “current circumstances.” Property taxes are reduced through lottery proceeds here. The businesses that sell scratch-off tickets make a big chunk of money, so they’re heavily invested.
I see people come in and routinely drop $50-100 in the course of a few minutes. I often think I should say, “Why don’t you give me your money, and I’ll decide how much to give you back?” I could use a die. Roll a six, and I’ll give you 60 percent of your money back!
Bill Bennett decries all this alarmism.
Trust him — it’s really OK.
In fact, it’s a virtue.
No one decries it because it puts money in corporate and municipal pockets, regardless of its social effects. A lot of areas, such as mine, rely on the revenues generated by gambling to run useful social programs. Additionally, they generate jobs in areas that need them. So, while gambling is outrageously bad for people and is nothing more than a state-legitimated pyramid scheme, it can come back and have beneficial effects for their locations.
I can’t speak directly towards the feeling of gambling because I don’t gamble. I’ve gambled twice and lost all the money I put in both times. I didn’t really see the fun of losing the money that I worked hard to earn.
