Actually, the cockpit communications of the Israeli pilots were released several years ago, and are easily available with a google search– I’ll email you the MP3s if you want, but most of the conversation is in Hebrew. When they came out, I sat down with my former boss, who’s Israeli and very interested in the Liberty incident, and we listened to them, with him translating the bits I didn’t get. No mention of it being a US ship– they were primarily concerned with its radar dishes, IIRC.
That’s not to say that it’s not possible that the Israelis didn’t attack the Liberty deliberately. But seeing as the US wasn’t Israel’s closest ally in 1967, and the fact that the Liberty was an NSA spy ship operating just off the coast of Israel, which was in the middle of a fight for its survival, it may well have been a legitimate target under the laws of war.
I disagree with a hell of a lot that Israel does and has done. I think that the settlements are morally and legally wrong. I think that some of Israel’s actions in the West Bank and Gaza in the last 40 years are about as ugly and horrible as ugly and horrible get. And with rare exceptions (Bush I being one of them actually), the US tends to go along with whatever the Israeli government wants to do, which is often not in anyone’s best interest, including the Israeli government. But I don’t understand this fixation on the Liberty or the Israeli lobby. Far more Americans have been killed by Palestinian guerrillas than died in the Liberty incident. And AIPAC, ZOA, and the rest are considered extremist jokes by most of the Jewish community in the US. I don’t think AIPAC has a disproportionate influence due to anything but the Religious Right’s fixation on Zionist eschatological fantasies.
