Photo of the Year

Protester Desiree Farooz confronts Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice in a photograph taken today by Charles Dharapak of the Associated Press.
Rice was preparing to testify before the House Foreign Affairs Committee when she encountered Farooz inside the hearing room. Farooz had painted her hands red, apparently to symbolize her group’s claim that members of President Bush’s cabinet have blood on their hands because of the way they’ve waged war in Iraq.
And somewhere in America, a copy editor is being called on the carpet for using this photo. His or her boss is saying, “Don’t ever do anything like that again, people don’t want to look at that with their morning coffee!”
And so it goes.

Farooz was immediately tasered and shipped to Gitmo…
Desiree was in Crawford with Cindy, which is where I met her. She subsequently gave up a teaching job and moved to DC to do activism full time. She is brave and strong, and I am proud of her for this. I agree the photo is historic. This angle is much better than the Reuters one I saw earlier.
Rice’s expression in that photo strikes me as being very much like the images I have seen of the Nazi collaborators confronted for their crimes up close and personal after the war.
Superb pic — too bad it doesn’t enlarge.
Desiree is dispicable. I am a liberal, a registered democrat, and ant-war. Action like that feeds into all the things conservatives say about us. I am ashamed.
