Since You Asked

You know, I’d just like to say that Cary Tennis’s “Since You Asked” advice column in Salon is one of the true pleasures in life. Not only is he a wise and thoughtful person, he’s a wonderful writer.
Check out his response to this woman who just found out her recently-deceased husband was having an affair.

That’s pretty caring advice. Still, I think he missed a big issue which is that the husband’s infidelity echoes a big hole in their marriage. How can this woman, now realizing this, work on that issue - her husband is gone. She needs to go into therapy to explore her grief and to explore what was missing in the marriage. She had a part in it. If she doesn’t come to grips with it she is doomed to repeat it.
Great point, Orson. That’s really true. It sort of dovetails with what I’ve been thinking about repetition, especially in the column the day before about the woman who left an abusive marriage only to fall in love with a thief — http://www.salon.com/mwt/col/tenn/2007/12/12/abuse/
