Stirring the Hornet’s Nest

This strikes me as a really bad move. We’ve screwed the Kurds before (1991 Gulf war) and now we’re helping the Turks go after the separatists? Maybe someone who knows more than I do can explain this. Noz?

the u.s. has generally supported turkish action against kurdish militants. turkey used to violate the iraqi border fairly regularly before saddam was overthrown (it happened a lot in the 1990s), we never raised a peep. these days we rely on turkey even more to ferry troops and supplies in and out of iraq via incirlik airforce base.
what exactly is there to be confused about? we’ve supported turkey in the past and turkey is dressing up its operations in the “fighting terrorists” language that the bush administration is so receptive to. sure, it probably will have negative consequences in the future. but has that ever stopped this administration before?
