So I’m pushing my shopping cart through the aisles of Kmart, trying to figure out which people I’ve forgotten, when my cell phone rings. It’s Dr. S, and we soon fall into a discussion that veers back and forth between politics and baseball.
“I wonder if it’s really worthwhile moving to Canada,” he says.
“Well, there is the health care. But you need a lot of cash to get into the country,” I say.
I pick up a hideous red and green Christmas-decoration container that’s on sale and throw it in the cart, asking him what he thinks of the two new players the Phillies signed. He says the Phillies continue to sign sporadic players, “hoping they all manage to have the best year of their careers all at the same time, and what are the odds of that happening?”
He segues into a soliloquy about the Red Sox trades and how they have to try to screw the Yankees with anyone they sign. “It’s like politics,” I agree. “It’s not enough to get something done, you have to screw your enemies while you do it.”
“Yeah, what’s up with Harry Reid going after Chris Dodd?” he says. “What’s that about - other than the obvious part about being corporate whores for the telecoms, I mean.”
“Much like the Phillies or many other teams, it’s not really about winning,” I say. “Reid just wants to help Bush while pretending to fight him. The Democrats are like the Phillies - if you can maintain your power and make money whether you win or lose, what fucking difference does it make?
“That’s why Harry Reid doesn’t care - he’s just maintaining. He wins either way.”
actually, it doesn’t cost that much to emigrate to quebec. you have to have $2500-$3600 on hand to cover you while you find work, which is substantial but not impossible.
The hard part with quebec is becoming bilingual, which is a requirement. It’s the easiest province to emigrate to.
Quebec is also the most wonderful province, if you like cities and/or food.
Montreal may be the nicest city on the continent.
Learning French isn’t the worst thing in the world.
