I think it’s fair to say that the NY Times editorial is mistaken when it attributes these actions to panic. We’ve learned that the domestic spying was being set up well before 9/11.

Which leads me to wonder if the secret to W’s ability to have his way with Congress — in spite of the Democratic majorities — is the result of a J. Edgar Hoover inspired file of dirty secrets.

Exactly. My thought was where the fuck were they while it was happening. But worse, where are the real patriots, men and women with the courage to call it what it is? No one who has the capacity to make him/herself heard is making a peep. No one. Surly, there are Republicans whose eyes are not glazed over. McCain? He really should know better. Democrats? Harry? Nancy? No one. I despair that we are lost.
