Had that happen when I got a used LCD from my work adn went to hook it up. I had to pickup a couple converter adapters just to get it to work properly. There's a lot of things(fan noise, beep pattern, hard drive noise, numlock lights, etc...) that can tell you what's wrong, be it power supply (cheap), monitor(medium-expensive), motherboard (medium), or cpu (expensive).
