We laid off four people in my office today.
It’s the first time I’ve ever lived through a layoff that didn’t include me, and I can’t help feeling it’s only a matter of time. We just had our largest client drastically reduce their contract with us and businesses are reluctant to spend one dime more than they need to.
One of the guys who was laid off said he hoped the Democrats managed to get unemployment benefits extended. One of the women was in tears - her husband’s unemployed, and she was so happy to finally have benefits when she became an employee six weeks ago. But there wasn’t enough work to keep her on.
It didn’t really surprise me; after all, the executives I talk to every day make it clear it’s no longer business as usual. And besides, after the past ten years, I am of the firm conviction that every job is a temp job.
So tonight, four more families are even more worried about how they’ll get by.

Soon, very soon, the South will rise again and we’ll have white slaves too. You-all will dance for massa. I’ll be pickin the cuter ones for house duty and the uglies can work in the fields. Ahh, the return of aristocracy.
I was ‘downsized’ twice before the term was even invented and another two after. First time was in 1981, two weeks before my son was born. Best wishes to your former workmates.
Suzie, I hope you survive all this crap.
