Edwards pulling out.
UPDATE: I just watched the press conference. He said he has received assurances from both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama that ending poverty will be a major focus of their campaigns - and since he didn’t throw his delegates to either candidate, I suspect he’ll use them later if necessary.
Edwards said Clinton and Obama had both pledged that “they will make ending poverty central to their campaign for the presidency.”
“This is the cause of my life and I now have their commitment to engage in this cause,” he said before a small group of supporters. He was joined by his wife Elizabeth and his three children, Cate, Emma Claire and Jack.

I haven’t felt so bad since election day 2004. I guess there really is no hope for my country to be restored.
This is a shame. Sen. Edwards demonstrated an intense desire to speak up for those without a voice in our current political environment, and helped to push the agenda of the Democratic Party primary to address those made worse off by our economic policies over the last few decades.
I was happy to support his campaign in the small ways that I could, and I for one will miss his efforts to make our national government more truly responsive to us all.
I really wish he had waited until after next Tuesday so I could have voted for him. I guess the ballots are already printed, so I think I’m gonna vote for him anyway.
So sad. And angry. And confused. I got an email from the campaign yesterday that said they were close to beating a 3 month fundraising record in one month, and please send more money.
Back to the nose-holding I was expecting for this election…
If it helps any, I suspect Elizabeth is in bad shape - she hasn’t been around much lately. If that’s true, I’m sure he wants to spend his time with his family.
Aw carp, carp, carp.
And ditto to Mr. Terwilliger’s comments; he’s still got my vote.
Dag-nabbit, I miss him already. I guess this means we have to settle for vague offers of hope and change with no real plans about how to enact said change. At least his presence, (as well as Kucinich before him) forced some discussion of actual issues. Of course, you wouldn’t know it from the corporate media, unless you think that fashion and hairstyle are actual issues.
So how long will it be before the Edwards campaign completes the accounting required to return all of his supporters’ money? Will they pro-rate whats left, and give a partial rebate to all? Or will they say that the early donations were spent as they were received, and just return the recent (record breaking) dollars? Or, does he ask us all to sign his warchest over to Obama?
I think I’m going to find another obsession. At 55, I’ve really been disappointed enough by this country’s politics.
I think we’re losing our best hope of defeating the repukes in Nov. I don’t understand why fellow Dems haven’t seen this. I guess, as usual, by the time PA’s primary rolls around, there’ll be only one left anyway. Thanks Harrisburg a-holes.
Nothing of mine to Obama. He can donate it to Afghan relief. Worst winter in a lifetime. 80,000 head of livestock and 200 people known dead from the cold. Real body count won’t be known till the spring thaw, if then. A friend who does relief work there just told me the story of a little girl freezing to death in an orphanage they’ve been trying to help. Wages are $2 a day. Women begging for money to buy potatos and bread to feed the kids. Corporations who’re paying kickbacks to local warlords are doing ok though. So much for Bush’s flowery description in the SOTU. I’m so really fucking NOT proud to be an american right now.
Ditto Rena at #8.
Feh.
It’s stinking already.
Guess it’ll be party politics, old school, old guard, same old.
Billary versus Caesar McCainus? Billary could lose, folks.
One hundred years in iraq. Yee-haaw!
Remember, it took a series of increasingly corrupt leaders to wreck Rome…there’s no cure for this problem, either. It’s a feed back loop. (Second Law of thermodynamics applied to societies: entropy, tending toward disorder.)
I know professionals who say that if McCain wins, they will move to Canada. So how bad does it have to get in America before the rubes realize who’s been lying to them?
America, you were beautiful. And God bless the Edwards family
Well, I guess the media finally got the damn Obama vs Clinton race that they’ve been pushing on us for over a year now.
Sigh.
I hope you’re wrong about Elizabeth being in bad shape. But I had wondered about that. I have enough people going through cancer right now.
Maybe we’ll get to see John as AG?
Sigh.
Damn it. I’ll sit out the primary.
Shit. And I already voted for him here in New York…
He inspired us. Let’s just carry on his aims and ideals anyway, because it’s the biggest choice we continue to control.
Oh, and eat the (uncaring) rich while we’re at it, too.
McCain is a scary choice, he’s running on a platform of less jobs - more wars. He knows that’s where the money is. The money shoveled up from the working poor, (formerly the middle class).
John Edwards was the only candidate that handily beat McCain in every poll, and we let him get away. I think we all need to get behind Mitt Romney and push hard to keep McCain out, (or learn to speak Canadian).
I can’t help but think that perhaps the men-in-black offered Edwards the JFK solution, or told him it would be his kids if he didn’t shut-up and go away. The timing of his withdrawl is suspect; Super Tuesday is not that far off. Should I be wearing my tinfoil hat?
And whatever became of the re-count in new Hampshire? We will all be truly fucked if our votes continue to be Diebolded.
Mad Martigan - Please recycle that tin foil hat! (speak Canadian????)
Edwards WILL endorse Obama. He hinted at it today in his speech:
“For decades, we stopped focusing on those struggles. They didn’t register in political polls, they didn’t get us votes and so we stopped talking about it.”
Clearly, he was referring to the Clintons.
