I am a mortgage broker and while this story doesn’t surprise me, the so called fixes are things that already happen. To say that one should get a Good Faith Estimate before signing anything is absurd. A Good Faith Estimate is provided in the initial disclosures.
Most mortgage brokers charge what they can get away with so to avoid being taken advantage of, all you need to do is be a smart and knowledgable consumer.
Mike is right- brokers are required by law to provide a good faith estimate with detailed list of fees. I just moved and bought a new house in the last 30 days so I know this from recent history!
