he was also planning his 2004 u.s. senate run at the time.

Well, not really, because there wasn't a seat to run for until 2003. So how could he be planning for 2004 in 2002 if he didn't even know the seat was open until 2003?

when in fact, he was running - unopposed - for his state senate seat when he made the speech

he was also planning his 2004 u.s. senate run at the time.

and its not about political "courage" as much as judgment. iraq was obviously a stupid idea to you and me at the time, but too many politicians with higher aspirations were willing to cast a vote that would lead to the deaths of thousands of people despite that obvious fact--people like hillary clinton, john kerry, john edwards, etc.

The "issue" is that Obama claims great political courage for his Iraq speech because it was in the "middle" of his race for the U.S. Senate - when in fact, he was running - unopposed - for his state senate seat when he made the speech. What puffery.

The "issue" appears to be based on the argument that no one starts running for an office a couple of months before their "official" announcement?

Umm. OK. Have fun with that.

I guess you need SOMETHING at this point.

Lambert, I'm fairly certain all the pundits like Kristol, Sullivan, Brooks and Broder will turn on a dime and say “Had we but known! I guess we really need to go with McCain after all!” regardless of the quality of the sandbag or nominee. That's their job. That's what they do. They'd do it even if we resurrected and ran Jesus 1.0.

Just checking the SiteMeter logs....
My worst case scenario is that we nominate the guy, Drudge sandbags us with everything he's been holding back, all the pundits like Kristol, Sullivan, Brooks turn on a dime and say "Had we but known! I guess we really need to go with experience after all!" and McCain ekes out a win (with the help of the usual suspects).

OMG! Lambert, this is shocking news. Do you mean to tell me that Republicans and their media mouthpieces might say mean things about the Democratic nominee? I have a hard time believing that.

I'm sure Drudge isn't going to sandbag us on any of this stuff because, you know, he would never do that.
Don't worry.
Everything's going to be fine.
