Commenter Barry Walden captures something important that I meant to, but really didn’t, in my post below.
Y’know? She probably loves him, and had no chance to rethink the relationship before she was thrust in front of the cameras. That he would subject her to that says volumes about who he is. That she was put in that position is a shame - his shame. I am sorry for her that she had to endure that.
I feel badly for her and her daughters for what they are being forced to deal with but I do NOT feel sorry for the humiliation she chose to accept by appearing at the presser. She had a CHOICE and she elected to stand besides that idiot. She was not the victim of walking into something she didn’t know was going to painful. Feel sorry for Rudy’s wife who gets dumped at a presser but to ask me to feel sorry for a wife who CHOOSES to appear next to her “politician-husband” who just got caught spending almost $6000 for an hour of sex and I say no way. Sure “love” makes people do stupid things but to then choose to do them in public and then see others feel sorry for her - not gonna happen…
Feel sorry for people that suffer through no choice of their own…she could have looked him in the face and said “no - go out there yourself you asshole” and then looked at his handlers and told them all to “go fuck themselves”…
Hmm. So far, no calls for John McCain to leave the campaign trail. You know, when a man marries his mistress, he creates a job vacancy.
Joe, I’m the last person to argue that people aren’t responsible for their own actions. Nevertheless, I’m disturbed by this particular rite of politicians who have been caught with their genitalia where it didn’t belong. I’d really like it to stop.
I’ve never been in a position where I found out my spouse was fucking other people for $5,500 an hour plus hotel rent and then been asked to stand next to her while she admitted as much at a press conference. I don’t know what I’d do. I’d like to think that I’d say “go fuck yourself,” but sometimes life the universe and everything interjects and things get more complicated than all of that.
Whatever. It doesn’t matter. It was his presser. He had a choice about who would be there. If his wife stood by his side for every presser he ever held for budget announcements and infrastructure plans and the minutia of Albany political intrigue , then it would maybe make sense for her to be there for his announcement that his dick wound up in the wrong place. Maybe then I would get it. Otherwise, fuck him. He used her as a prop. If it was her choice and she was willing, a decent person would have talked her out of it.
Joe, my commentary and the commentary I’m highlighting is solely about him and his choices. He’s the public figure and, in my opinion, he deserves some ridicule.
I felt a brief twinge of sympathy, which subsided somewhat when I learned that what she most enjoyed doing in life was being a corporate lawyer gobbling companies in mergers.
They’re a striking, but unsympathetic, couple.
Who told her? How was it phrased? How much time did she have to think? Had she even seen her husband before she was pushed on stage, let alone given time to talk to him? Were her best friends there, to hold her hand? He’s the one who had the time to think, and the advisers. Don’t anybody fucking say a word about her behavior.
We don’t know why she was there.
But I was talking to a friend at lunch who was on the city council. His wife told him that if he was ever caught in such a situation he’d be out there by himself and she’d be gone.
You know, this personal tragedy didn’t just pop up in their marriage. They must have known months ago that he was caught by the FBI. So they’ve been dealing with it for some time.
When a spouse wanders from the marriage bed it reflects some problem in the relationshiop. They were probably in counseling, if not, they should have been.
Also consider that a long term marriage is much more than a love connection - it is a financial and social edifice. She is staring into the abyss of a major financial and social catastrophe - and for what, because of his minor if monumentally stupid picadillo. Her world is being wrecked for the public’s love of a scandal. She must be outraged at what’s being done to her marriage.
I hope that they survive this disaster and have a rich future together.
