This article by Sean Wilentz has undoubtedly been mentioned before on this blog, but it articulated for me an unease I have had about Obama. He seems willing to do anything, regardless of ethics , morality or a larger good**, to gain the White House for himself. Not for his party or even for an idea, but for personal satisfaction or aggrandizement.
They keep saying, “Politics ain’t beanbag,” and I want candidates who want the office enough to to fight hard for it. At the same time there are degrees of cynicism, and this crosses that line for me. Race is so explosive in America.
I do know that Obama comes out of the Chicago machine. He’s from Illinois, after all, and the Daleys have always been willing to do anything to win, but I keep thinking that it’s no wonder Obama is so willing to reach out to Republicans. He’s just like them.
**I recognize that Clinton has been accused of this failing. By Obama himself on occasion, I believe.
