This morning, a contractor happened to be driving under I-95 near my part of the city and noticed a massive crack in one of the supporting pillars. (The pillar was scheduled for repair in June, and the inspector was there to see what equipment would be needed.)
The crack had widened considerably since the last inspection, so this morning they’ve shut down I-95. Ground zero? My neighborhood, where they’re dumping all the traffic. So now I have to figure out some way to get to work (and that’s why I also made a decision that as soon as I can, I’m buying a GPS).
I am, however, very grateful that this contractor was doing his job. Because an I-95 collapse would have been a real tragedy.

There are some cheap GPS gizmos now, good luck. And thank goodness for that sharp-eyed contractor.
susie,
not sure if it helps, but as of 645-7am this morning the castor ave ramp NB 95 was OPEN and there was not much traffic getting on there…
It looked like the official detour on ramp–bridge st aramingo was a real mess and traffic was way backed up there.
I drove right by the messed up support this morning on RIchmond st. just looks like a column with some busted concrete.
I was shocked at how fast they had people there working, they were already jack hammering away when I drove by at 650am.
be careful with those GPS units!!!

Yeah, but it’s still better than trying to read a map book while you’re driving.
By the time I left for work, northbound traffic was closed from Girard Ave. and up. I finally got onto the Betsy Ross bridge, but the westbound Richmond St. exit is closed, so I don’t know how I’m going to get home. Should be fun!
