I’m sure these monks are in prison now - or worse:
The temple’s administrative head began speaking about the importance of national unity and Tibet’s long history as part of China. A group of about 30 young monks, some in tears, swarmed around reporters in the temple’s interior courtyard and shouted: “Tibet is not free! Tibet is not free!” Officials herded away reporters who tried to interview the monks. (Please see related article.)
The impromptu antigovernment protest was an embarrassment to the Chinese hosts, who organized the journalists’ visit to demonstrate that calm and unity had returned to Lhasa after rioting two weeks ago. With China in the international spotlight for the approaching 2008 Beijing Olympics, the government sought to convey that the violence in Lhasa was instigated by a small group of outsiders — including Tibetan Buddhists affiliated with the exiled spiritual leader the Dalai Lama.
