The Back Door

Even though I talked about this to several people at EschaCon last weekend, I mostly got blank stares. (Hey, what do I know? I didn’t even go to college!)
What I said was, these kinds of persuasive political rumors get spread by email.
You know what I’m talking about - the ones your wingnut friends and relatives send, hoping to convert you? The ones with the Very Shocking Things that most people don’t know about a prominent liberal?
If they sound halfway well-written, people believe them. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve directed people to Snopes.com to debunk this crap.
So I’m saying if we want to win this election, we’d better be sending out some viral emails of our own.

yeah, i get them too. there’s a certain segment of my family that mindlessly forwards those things. some of them are really shocking, often coming from aunts and uncles who are solid democrats. i usually hit “reply to all” and give a snopes link, asking my relative (again) to please try to check the email’s veracity before s/he sends it to everyone s/he knows. but the emails keep coming. i get them every few weeks.
Susie, it’s probably a good idea, as long as the viral emails aren’t lies like the ones that the wingnuts spread.
McCain has a long career and hasn’t had nearly enough vetting. Some enterprising person should start compiling a list of possible topics for discussion and inclusion.
No, don’t look at me. I’m an editor. All I can do is check the syntax.
My mother sends them to me, I send them back corrected, but the Muslim one she insists she read in his books.
Hey. If a black man or a white woman becomes president, will those sorts of people move to Canada?
I’ve been forwarding articles on rampant misogyny. I’m not sure it’s doing any good.
There are many, many legitimate news pieces and actual McCain video clips available that will do the trick nicely. Here’s a couple of good ones to get you started:
