my take on this is that not all women (unbelievably!) want to be on camera like the pretty girl does, and that the men will say anything to stand next to and talk to the pretty girl a little bit longer.
most women i know are big mouths so she must have some real knack of picking ones that don’t want to talk. of course, it could just be they don’t want to talk to her because she is so obnoxious.
Wow . Yes I believe that there is a care taking inbred thing with us ladies . We will demure to ‘others’ , (male) of course , to give them a sense of being in control . We care about their fragile egos - funny how they do not care so much about ours .. of course , not all . Thank Goodness there are many fine Men , who get it . I have been concerned about the lack of care the younger girls ’seem’ to have about really important issues . Issues , that I fought for and payed for with scorn from family and friends ..
It’s her boobs.
Not rocket science.
Men like boobs.
There seems to be a huge and ever growing group of folks that have a “head-in-the-sand” attitude. It isn’t defined by gender or age or social status or even intelligence. I have a few friends I occasionally send links I think would be of interest, and I am repeatedly surprised by the number of times I get “deleted, not read” notices in my email box. I’ve learned not to take these occasions as a personal affront, because in face-to-face conversations, they are intelligent, involved, and interested in many of the subjects that I care about. Duh. That’s why they’re friends. But there remains the unread email links.
I can accept that most of those folks on the video are simply shy. We all have seen many on the street interviews that give a negative impression of the interviewee. It’s natural to want to avoid any chance of being such. One women was obviously semi-lost and completely focused on finding her way. The guy who made the comment “I’ve never voted” and the woman who claimed ignorance to be the reason she wouldn’t offer an opinion were two that caught my attention. To me, they show the ostrich’s head-in-the-sand attitude, the man more so. These folks sample the world outside their immediate personal interests only on their own terms, not as a citizen-at-large. We all do this at various times for various reasons, but some do it constantly. Those make up the group I mentioned initially.
I don’t mean this as a put-down to the folks on the video. Just observation from my cynical old self.
Still enjoy your timely, thoughtful posts. Best wishes.
Not true in my world. All the women (me most of all) are the biggest loudmouths about politics. It may be a question of not trusting the camera–who is this person asking the questions and where is this video going to be shown. Strangers stopping you on the street are sort of suspect.
Maybe most women actually have someplace to be. Or maybe most women have people making demands on them throughout the day, and would like to be able to just walk from one place to the next without asked for one more damn thing.
Or maybe they think she’s got her head up her ass.
Did I mention we got ten inches of snow last night?
Most of the women I work with won’t say anything other than that Barak Obama is a closet muslim. Ask them for any details and they just wave me off and say they don’t want to talk about it.
I am by no means short of opinions or of offering them if asked (in most settings) but I would say “no comment” or “no opinion” to that woman also. People on the street with cameras have an agenda and will edit the footage to show whatever they want. As a previous comment said, you don’t know where it will be shown or when or where. I was interviewed for network tv as a “woman on the street” a few years ago and the footage was edited so it gave the exact opposite impression of what I have actually said.
Even more recently I was interviewed for a print publication. The reporter accidentally copied me on an email to the editor showing that the slant of the story had been predetermined before they started writing. My comments, carefully chosen and thought out, were from the exact opposite viewpoint. When interviewed the reporter asked questions from several angles clearly trying to get me to say what he wanted to write. I wouldn’t. The article focused on quotes that agreed with the predetermined viewpoint.
I would discourage anyone, male or female, from cooperating with someone on the street wielding a microphone and a camera. No good can come of it.
