I’m not impressed. As a huge behind-the-scenes power during JPII’s last years, it’s almost certain that he was heavily involved in the denial position the Church took.
I suppose it’s possible he had a sincere change of heart, but I’d say it’s more likely a PR move to quiet the controversy and stop the bleeding of members and financial support, and perhaps forestall more lawsuits.
As an ex-Catholic, I can say that I knew many wonderful, sincerely good people when I was involved. But I’m extremely skeptical of the Vatican in general and this pope in particular.
