I think that there are reasons to employ tasers even acknowledging their occasionally deadly results. Without going into details, and accepting that the non-lethal description of tasers has lead to unwarranted use, I saw two deputies use theirs last summer to arrest a violent, methamphetamine fueled male. The arrest was the end of a process of escalating force, during which one officer was injured and it looked to me as though the situation was about to get much worse. The eventual arrestee didn’t even seem to notice the pepper spray. It was dark, and when I saw them pull the tasers out, I assumed that they were drawing their guns. If they had shot the guy, I would have testified that there was imminent danger of significant injury or death to the officers and the public. Instead, four shots with the tasers subdued the arrestee, and they got him into the police vehicles. We can do the “woulda, coulda, shoulda” argument about any such incident. However, I believe that the alternative was deadly force, so the potential for a deadly outcome from the tasers was an improvement.
