And it won’t get better anytime soon:
TAMPA, FL — Tampa Bay’s largest agency for helping homeless and “working poor” families is reporting a huge increase in requests for service in recent months. Metropolitan Ministries says the number of families needing help is up 20% over the same period last year.
Metropolitan Ministries spokeswoman Ana Mendez tells ABC Action News.com, “The current state of the economy and the unaffordable housing market are the driving forces behind the increase.”
There are 20-40 families on the agency’s housing waiting list per night. It is strapping the Met’s cash reserves. Rev. Morris Hintzman, leader of the ministry, says the ministry is facing a $265,000 shortfall as the fiscal year draws to a close June 1st.
