actually, aside from the endless dust there's a heckuva lot fewer allergens out there than there are here. No mold, not really an pollen to speak of, just lots and lots of fine alkaline dust. Whenever you're ready!

I know, I know! Maya and her husband go every year and I could certainly go with them, but I'm pretty sure my allergies couldn't take it.

susie,

don't let the dust scare you. it comes you deal with it. goggles, a face mask, patience and friends. that's all you need*.

i've gone for the past six years and participated in the creation of a number of art installations and other goof-ball schemes. every year it surprises me in new ways and it's definitely stretched who i am into something larger and better.

it's also even more fun then it looks. i've passed barbie death camp many times on my way to something else just as good or better (depending on your tastes). i love it and think it's great - and it's only one thing in one small part of city of over 35,000 (probably more) people.

find some friends who go regularly and go with them. they'll have the advanced infrastructure that makes what sounds like an ordeal actually quite a luxurious experience.

we shower every day. last year we made 20 different kinds of vodka infusions (each more delicious than the last) and distributed them at random. we also setup and maintained an interactive sound light piece in the middle of the playa.

and we danced our asses off.

on the day of the biggest most obnoxious dust storm i had one of the best days of my life and that was even without my fiance who i was already missing terribly.

when the dust passed i rode a borrowed windsurfer skateboard to the edge of the city and lo and behold was graced with the most fantastic double rainbow i have ever seen.

then i went home where my friends made me dinner. later we went out dancing and i didn't come home til dawn.

just one day in the desert.

hM

* ok fine - i probably had some prosecco and ice cold tecates too - sue me.

Hey, Susie--thanks for the link. My commenters were almost uniformly anti, somewhat to my surprise. (Perhaps I just have really bad taste!) I thought that it could possibly have been clever, although only if it had stuck to one historical incident, perhaps.
