Abortion is between a woman and her doctor. Period. Once again, Obama plays into right-wing framing because after all, we know all these flighty women are having late-term abortions for frivolous reasons and must be stopped:
WASHINGTON (AP) - Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama says “mental distress” should not qualify as a health exception for late term-abortions, a key distinction not embraced by many supporters of abortion rights.
In an interview this week with “Relevant,” a Christian magazine, Obama said prohibitions on late-term abortions must contain “a strict, well defined exception for the health of the mother.”
Obama then added: “Now, I don’t think that ‘mental distress’ qualifies as the health of the mother. I think it has to be a serious physical issue that arises in pregnancy, where there are real, significant problems to the mother carrying that child to term.”
Last year, after the Supreme Court upheld a federal ban on late-term abortions, Obama said he “strongly disagreed” with the ruling because it “dramatically departs from previous precedents safeguarding the health of pregnant women.”
The health care exception is crucial to abortion rights advocates and is considered a legal loophole by abortion opponents. By limiting the health exception to a “serious physical issue,” Obama set himself apart from other abortion rights proponents.
He is either pandering to the right wing theocracy or he is grossly under-informed. I suspect it’s the former.

Well, the shine’s certainly gone of the apple for me. Nothing Obama’s said or done over the past two weeks suggests anything other than a right-wing fop to me. Where did I see someone quoted today, something to the effect that he can’t criticize McCain as running for a third BushCo term since Obama’s already taken that spot. I recall making the statement during the primary that Obama and Clinton were rethug lite, just a different mask for BushCo corporatism. I quit donating to any official organ of the Democratic party and am encouraging like-minded Dem friends to do the same.
We will know whether or not Barack Obama has been completely compromised if he chooses a Blue Dog Democrat to be his running mate.
By then it will be too late.
Barack Obama will essentially be just another George W. Bush, “all talk, and no cattle.” He will have shown his true “colors” which will be more moderate-to-conservative than moderate-to-liberal.
And I like Obama. He talks a good game. But the last thing our country needs right now is anymore Fascist conservative Republican brainstorms, or anything even remotely resembling a Fascist conservative Republican brainstorm.
Almost 80 percent of U.S. citizens are extremely upset with the direction in which Fascist conservative Republicans have taken our beloved country.
Getting elected president should be no problem for Barack Obama. He doesn’t have to pander to any presumed “middle of the roaders,” since a majority of American citizens are really fed up with Republicans and their democracy-destroying policies.
So what is Obama really playing at? Or did he make all those liberal/progressive statements earlier like George W. Bush made similar statements back in 2000, after which Dick Cheney, following the stolen presidential election, informed more moderate conservative Republicans that Bush had been lying to convince enough “middle of the roaders” that he wasn’t out to destroy our nation in pursuit of a “permanent Republican majority.”
Like I said, Obama’s choice to be his running mate will reveal the real Obama to us, which he will probably delay until the last moment, leaving many Democratic voters with buyer’s remorse.
I hope I’m wrong, but recent developments don’t look too encouraging.
I think we now see the real Obama… I for one don’t believe we have to wait for more… see where that got us with George. I would hope the convention in Denver will change some things. Obama is just “George lite” opportunist…and I agree with Ron above…Obama is all hat and no cattle type of dude.
Has anyone spent any great amount of time talking to delegates, super or otherwise? I wonder what will go down at the convention.
It’s probably time to move to Canada.
you can just title all your obama posts “dino obama, nahnahnahnahnah told ya so!”
