My guess is that, in Palin, McCain got himself a hard right, wingnut theocrat who has the ability to come off as completely sane in most situations. It’s either that, or she’s a completely sane person who has honed the ability to make wingnut theocrats feel that she is one of them.
Just a guess. We’ll see how it plays out.

I beg to differ. You give McLame far too much credit for political foresight.
He’s just a crazy old coot with a need to be around much younger women who look much better than he does.
He’s a hothead, a gambler, and not too smart.
Unless this is part of some Machiavellian ploy to use the VP announcement to distract people from Obama’s Denver triumph, and then have her step down with a seemingly legitimate excuse (such as, perhaps, her Downs syndrome kid suddenly taking a turn for the worse and requiring more of her compassionate motherly attention) so he can appoint someone more plausible, then this is just one more embarrassing gaffe of a doddering and senescent septuagenarian whose mind has been shot for quite a while.
I think you misunderestimate both Mc Cain and Pailn-and here we go again for another round of white guys bashing women.
I wouldn’t vote for the ticket, but Palin has more experience GOVERNING than Obama does, bottom line-about as much as Kaine, who made Obama’s short list. she also comes off as smart and engaging.
it’s a startling choice, and will be controversial, but it will make the race vastly more interesting.
I actually think she’ll be a tremendous asset to the ticket. She’ll energize the fundie base, which McCain can’t do by himself.
yes - she will energize the fundie-base. But they were all going to vote or mccentury anyway…and as true fundies they WILL vote - it’s part of their religious expectation. so other than getting people excited to vote for you who are already in the bag, it does little except give the crazy-racists an easy way to vote GOP and hide behind a “progressive” label. People need to realize Johnny-boy chose her after only meeting her one time and hardly talking to her outside or meet-n-greets.
I’m sure Cheney is fine with turning over his VP duties to an ex-mayor of Mayberry.
“I wouldn’t vote for the ticket, but Palin has more experience GOVERNING than Obama does …”
Doesn’t she also have more experience “GOVERNING” than McCain? For that matter, Geedubyah had more experience “GOVERNING” than our current candidates, when he ran. Perhaps that’s not a very useful measure - it basically says that Palin (or Bush) simply held different jobs than the candidates from the Senate. And didn’t hold those jobs for a very long time.
I’m surprised to hear you buying into this Susie (I’ll blame it on the paint fumes - a legit excuse if ever there was one: chemicals like those make me sick as a dog, and foggy as hell. For that, the vacay will help for sure. Enjoy!)
As I said before, “The pick is at least interesting, and steals some of the focus from Obama. But it sounds like Palin’s political positions are shit, and she’s basically a wingnut lightweight, so the hell with her, and the moose she rode in on!”
OOOOPS! Mea culpa - I attributed Susan’s post to Susie. A thousand apologies … but I do still really empathize with the paint fumes issue. I can’t be around that stuff either, I don’t know how some folks aren’t bothered by it.
Anyway, the rest of my post stands, but once again, sorry.
This is a calculated move to energize the female and fundie vote.
I agree with Izquierdo and smell a Rovian ploy. I just don’t see a true fundie mom with an infant child (with Down’s no less) would want to move her family from Alaska to DC and take a job where she hardly gets to see her family. I would bet money that if elected, so only serves a month or two.
I think you misunderestimate both Mc Cain and Pailn-and here we go again for another round of white guys bashing women.
What the fuck about this post made you think anything like what you wrote was a reasonable response to it? Just curious.
Chris, I thought it was a reply to Izquierdo, not to your original post, especially the part that calls the Palin pick “one more embarrassing gaffe of a doddering and senescent septuagenarian whose mind has been shot for quite a while.” That seems more than a little dismissive of a Western governor whose biography is tailor-made to support the McCain ticket, and it’s clear that
she’s being subjected to criticism that other male first-term erstwhile VP picks (Kaine, Jindal, and Crist) were not.
I agree with you and with Susan–and wish that the Dems would just shut up if they can’t stick to criticizing Palin’s (egregious) policy positions and stay away from the MILF and beauty pageant jokes. Susie is right–Palin has done more for McCain’s campaign in the last 30 hours than he’s done for it all summer.
Excellent points, Historiann. Thanks. I too “wish that the Dems would just shut up if they can’t stick to criticizing Palin’s (egregious) policy positions and stay away from the MILF and beauty pageant jokes.”
She’s a good girl and does what she’s told. She also knows her allotted place.
Nothing like a good ole sinner with lots and lots and lots of sins to turn to fundiementalism to ‘wash’ away what she used to do quite frequently and enthusiatically.
Why is it that every idiot in the US thinks that Downs kids are that lovable scamp from the TV show? Umm…he was the supergenius Downs kid. You know, a comparable ‘norm’ would have already solved the energy issues, ended the African food crisis, and written the Peace Treaty between Arabs and Israelis.
