Fun With COBRA

I just found out that my former employer has switched his insurance plan to a cheaper one, and I now need a completely different set of insurance info as a result.
This most likely means that the authorization for an ankle MRI I finally got two weeks ago (the one I’ve been fighting to get for months) is invalid.
Oh, joy.

Our small company found out that Health Assurance was going to raise our rate 76% for ‘09, so we applied to Aetna and Blue Cross (who we had until 2 years ago). Aetna would raise our rate 126%!! So for the coming year, we’re going back to Blue Cross with a $500 deductible.
If we ever get national one-payer… good riddance to these stinking parasites.
This whole medical scenario is a total waste of time.
I just got back from the oral surgeon with my older daughter. She now has a cough and has to postpone the removal of her wisdom teeth. But … UH Oh..then there’s the knee surgery on the 18th… There are the Xrays, the MRI the pre-cert /physcial/bloodwork, the full mouth scan, pain management without a precription plan……I’m so over it!
MRIs only cost about two, three hundred bucks per minute. No sweat!
MRI’s are the biggest scam out there. Not the technology which is good, but the pricing. My GF had an MRI, the hospital billed her insurance $3000 and she had to pay 20% or $600 out of pocket. Well you can go to a testing lab and have the same MRI done, cash up front for wait for it…. $600.
The MRI co-pay was as much as the surgi-center’s co-pay for a meniscus repair. MRI’s are very pricey. Why?
my mri’s (brain, hip) have all been in the thousand dollar range.
