plus, i suspect it is too late for a no fly zone to save the rebels at this point.

I’m guessing that it isn’t too late because the US is calling for a no-fly zone and also direct action against Libyan military. This means, to me, that the US withheld approval until it could negotiate some sort of deal with the rebels, and I would (all this is speculation, but then, I’m just a guy, standing in front of a girl, trying to tell her….no, no, how did I get here?) further guess that any deal has something to do with oil contracts.
Just speculatin’, I know, but if I were representing the US, I’d cut a deal for support.
