Bernie Sanders

Today:

I think there are millions of Americans who are deeply disappointed in the president, who believe that with regard to Social Security and other things, he said one thing as a candidate and is doing something very much else as a president. Who cannot believe how weak he has been for whatever reason in negotiating with Republicans, and there’s deep disappointment.

So my suggestion is, I think one of the reasons the president has made the move so far to the right is that there is no primary opposition to him and I think it would do this country a good deal of service if people started thinking about candidates out there to begin contrasting a progressive agenda as opposed to what Obama believes he’s doing. […] So I would say to Ryan, discouragement is not an option. I think it would be a good idea if President Obama faced some primary opposition.

You know, Bernie, it doesn’t have to be a Democrat. Think about it!

  1. I don’t know if the country is ready for a president from Brooklyn. Regardless of the country’s flaws, anybody wanting to primary BO should take a full bore progressive populist approach. He or she would also need a fully developed media machine to put truth out there in a way that grabs indies and makes wingers heads explode. The first part would be battered hard by Fux and the equivalency mavens if the second part isn’t there to hit back just as hard. It looks like 5/6 years hard work to get in place. I wish it could be done overnight.

  2. Its what happened to LBJ. Of course Obama is not 25% of the man LBJ was, for all his faults, so I doubt he would have the integrity to quit for the sake of the country.

  3. LBJ wasn’t primaried, was he? I thought he just said forget it and didn’t run.
Obama will run, and be shocked if anybody runs against him. I personally think that the left has no choice except to primary him; otherwise the progressive movement may as well give it up.

  4. Eugene McCarthy ran in the New Hampshire primary, and Robert Kennedy was lurking around in the shadows to see what might happen.
