I’m guessing pushed. the Qatari government has gotten a lot of pressure over al-J coverage of the Arab uprising. for years the unspoken deal was that Qatar would bankroll the channel, but basically leave it’s editorial content alone so long as it didn’t go after the qatari royal family. but with Arab uprisings springing up around the region al-Jazeera’s critical journalism that used to be viewed as a nuisance by qatar’s neighbors is now viewed as a threat to their rule. so Qatar has been under pressure to get al-J to tone it down, at least when it comes to covering the monarchies of the GCC.
the fact that the replacement is a member of the Qatari royal family does not bode well, unfortunately.
the NYT says the resignation was fallout from a wikileaks cable that claimed that al-J softened its coverage of iraq in response to u.s. pressure.
