Hopefully the same thing will happen in Pennsylvania:
(Reuters) – The Obama administration on Monday blocked a new Texas law requiring voters to show photo identification before they can cast a ballot out of concerns it could harm some Hispanic voters who lack such identification.
The state law approved in May 2011 required voters to show government-issued photo identification, which could include a driver’s license, a military identification card, a birth certificate with a photo, a current U.S. passport, or a concealed handgun permit.
I kinda liked the concealed carry feature of the Texas law for the panic that would ensue if blacks applied en masse for a permit to carry in the polling places. Unfortunately the Supreme Court has just about ruled on the Justice Department action in advance. The Voting Rights Act hung by a thread last time around and survived by the assurance that it had just about run its course. Given ID provisions in all those states not under jurisdiction, the Court will reinstate this law. These ID provisions will explode in the November election cycle when Republicans challenge voters in heavily Democratic constituencies to gum up the polling places. They got away with that in Ohio in 2004.
A birth certificate with a photo? Whose birth certificate has a photo?
So, like we shouldn’t have to show a picture ID to use a credit card in a State liquor store, or to get a driver’s license at the DMV, or buy weapons in PA either. Right?
Surely those things are not more important than voting, right?
i was talking to my 80 year old mother today and this (outside of the war) is the thing she is most mad about.
i’d like to see people showing up with birth certificates with their baby pictures on it (yeah , i know, they don’t have those).
i never had to show id to use a credit card in a state liquor store. when i live in ny it was illegal in that state. don’t know if still is.
and no you don’t need photo id to get a drivers license and if you did no one would get one since that’s pretty much most people’s photo id.
oops i meant first photo id. duh.
