When I moved here, the food pantry served 100 families, and it quickly grew to 400. Now it’s 1,000, and the neighbors hate it – for some of the usual reasons.

The “insiders” on Kirkbride Street better be careful before they become “outsiders”. They probably don’t mind sending monthly checks to help folks who are starving who they don’t see. But, hey, when starvation gets too close to home, we tend to get a little nervous, don’t we? The monthy checks sent far beyond our borders to starving children eases the conscience, but ‘not in my backyard’……….
That’s the funny part. It’s not the “nice” part of the neighborhood, I see the area in the local crime stats all the time for domestic abuse and stabbings, stuff like that. A lot of the people there are already struggling.
They hate it because it spoils the illusion that it’s a place where they won’t end up.
