  1. Susie,

Oddly I have considered this question for a while now. (Not that it would ever happen, mind you.)

My decision is the same as yours.

I think my reasons are a mite different though. I would not look to be influenced one way or the other because no one much cares what I think (And my last novel was published four years ago now) and because no one much cares what I think, I guard my integrity very carefully.

It is not that I am above such things, I just find them uninviting.

The larger truth you are talking about is really a problem. Atrios calls it being assimilated by the Borg (from the STNG) and I think that is pretty close to the truth.

Those who find themselves in a position where they are privy to information that they perceive the rest of us as not being aware of immediately try to control this information on the theory that being in a position of trust by being granted this special knowledge requires you to act with circumspection as to who will be granted a position at your table.

It is like a computer system. (Which I used to design) In every computer system I have used there is always a level of secrecy involved. Even if the information is of little import, YOU are not allowed to see all of it. This has the effect of enhancing both the ego and position of the person “Above” you.

If you apply such a paradigm then those in positions of authority in our government, they become excessively secretive and even more damning; they start to perceive themselves as being “Better” than others. Because they accept this responsibility they then start to act in a manner that will not only enhance their current access to information but will start to act in a manner that perceive will enable them to have a higher knowledge still.

And then they no longer report the truth and instead report what they believe those to be in a position of authority want them to think.

    And here we are.
