Interesting but I think an emotionally weak performance. Tom Rush’s version is far better, based on Eric Von Schmidt’s arrangement of the gospel version collected by Alan Lomax. Nanci Griffith’s version is wonderful as well. I enjoy James Taylor, but his low key smoothness doesn’t do this song justice.
Couldn’t find a better version on YouTube. I go for the ones with the best audio, usually.
