I’m not familiar enough with the American system. If the Republicans refuse to elect a speaker, why can’t the Democrats? Does the number of votes for speaker need to be a majority and not just a plurality?
They literally can’t convene a session without the Speaker. It has to be a majority, which is why they may need Democratic votes.
