  1. OK, do we really want to reduce the amount of money spent on our health here, or are we just making excuses for keeping taxes low?
I’m a really good example of how to save real money on healthcare, or how not to:
If I’d had any access to the most basic of checkups between 2005 and 2008, I would have found out my blood pressure had gone from OK to 160/100, treated it with the medicine I now control it with, and avoided having the stroke that left me disabled.
The costs of said stroke that could have been saved include, but aren’t limited to the quarter million my hospital stay and rehab came to, the year of state disability I collected, the eight years so far of SSDI I have collected (as the only income supporting two people), all of the taxes I would have paid had I remained in the workforce, and all of the money I would have earned and spent had I been able to work these last nine years.
When you look at it that way, a yearly checkup and three prescriptions seem like a pretty good deal, financially speaking, never mind the difference in my life and the lives of the people close to me.

  2. Preventing illness certainly seems to be the most cost effective way to run a health care system.

A single-payer system would accomplish that as long as said system included every citizen. (Including every politician.)
