The town of Mariposa in California is surrounded by wildfires and may well burn to the ground even as I write.
I went to school there back in the ’60’s. The high school was built by the WPA-adobe exterior, clay tile roof-marvelous mural inside. Serious, the high school was beautiful. The principal wore cowboy boots to work !
And the people were friendly, in a way, that coming from Upstate New York, I was not used to being greeted with a “Hey” every time I went out in public.

Mariposa County carried for Goldwater back in the ’60’s. It carried for Trump in 2016.
But my heart still bleeds.
