The Judeans stole the city in 1800 BC and called it Jerusalem. They didn’t do much with the place infrastructure wise for a thousand years and left it a backwater.

Since that time Jerusalem has had multiple owners including the Catholic Church, the Ottoman Empire and the United Kingdom.
