1. Because she’s a real singer, one who doesn’t resort to glissando or other excessive “American Idol” singing tricks.
2. Because she sings about heartbreak. (Duh.) So does Taylor Swift, but Adele sounds heartbroken. I mean, I listen to a lot of new music and most of them aren’t great singers and their songs are hard to relate to. So when an Adele comes along, people relate. Those songs are cathartic. (It’s also why Aretha Franklin and Dusty Springfield are still popular.) And, as Kal Rudman, publisher of the music newsletter Monday Morning Quarterback, once told Bruce Springsteen, “You have to write a song girls like. They buy most of the records.”

3. Yesterday I heard a local DJ talking about her selling almost three millions CDs in three days — not streaming, honest-to-God actual CDs. He said she was on track to break every current sales record, and then whispered, “I don’t think it’s that good. Don’t tell anybody I said that.” Um, see 1. and 2.
I reallly like Adele, but I don’t listen to the lyrics really. It’s something about the quality of her voice, the timber. She hits a note and it strums the heart.
