Tamron Hall Eviscerates Scott Baio Over His Nasty Hillary Tweet

#wethepeoplecc #WeThePeople Scott Baio, take a seat.

MSNBC’s Tamron Hall hosted Scott Baio this morning. I’m sure he saw it as an opportunity for some free career advancement, but Tamron brought her A-game to the interview. After putting on his piety hat and informing Hall that he wrote his speech in church Sunday morning, Baio wasn’t ready for what hit him next. Hall… Continue reading “Tamron Hall Eviscerates Scott Baio Over His Nasty Hillary Tweet”

The First Donald Trump/Mike Pence Interview was Humiliating for the Republican Party (Video)

TrumpPence

On Sunday, Donald Trump and Mike Pence appeared on 60 Minutes in their first joint interview since it was announced that the Indiana governor was going to be Trump’s running mate. style=”display:inline-block;width:336px;height:280px” data-ad-client=”ca-pub-5626295912827181″ data-ad-slot=”4169069414″> And, wow, this was one of the most awkward things I’ve ever watched. This Trump/Pence team might rank up there with McCain/Palin… Continue reading “The First Donald Trump/Mike Pence Interview was Humiliating for the Republican Party (Video)”

Rising up

gadsden-flag

Good Nation post about the NRA’s concept of civilians having guns to rise up against their government — or, as I like to call it, the Red Dawn fantasy:

Micah Johnson was what Wayne LaPierre might call a “good guy with a gun”—a combat veteran with no criminal record. He clearly believed that “a situation [had arisen] when the government grossly violates the rights of American citizens.” He was reportedly “upset about the recent police shootings” of Philando Castile in a suburb of Minneapolis and Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge. A neighbor said Johnson was a “good kid” who “just snapped” last week, after watching one too many videos of black men being shot down.

CBS reported that Johnson had amassed a large stockpile of weapons and bomb-making materials. On Facebook, he had liked radical black groups that had posted “calls to arms” similar to what you might find at an Oath Keepers or militia website. One post read, “The Pig has shot and killed Alton Sterling in Baton Rouge, Louisiana! You and I know what we must do and I don’t mean marching, making a lot of noise, or attending conventions. We must ‘Rally The Troops!’ It is time to visit Louisiana and hold a barbeque.”

Gov. Mary Fallin: Trump ‘Trying To Campaign As A Racial Healer’

Governor of Oklahoma Mary Fallin at Southern Republican Leadership Conference May 2015, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma by Michael Vadon

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin has been floated as a possible vice presidential pick for Donald Trump in recent weeks and this Sunday on CNN’s State of the Union, we got a chance to find out just how badly she might want the job. Host Jake Tapper asked Fallin about Donald Trump’s latest campaign video where he… Continue reading “Gov. Mary Fallin: Trump ‘Trying To Campaign As A Racial Healer’”

Is something wrong with Trump?

I haven’t had the time to watch this hour-and-a-half-long speech Donald made last night, but everyone I know who did watch it said there was something obviously wrong with him, like he was coked up. Here’s Steve Benen:

Trump wanted to talk about the anti-Semitic image in his recent tweet, and his belief that his campaign shouldn’t have deleted his original message. Trump wanted to talk about the parts of Saddam Hussein’s record he agrees with. Trump wanted to talk about how much he likes the Brexit policy he knows little about.
Trump wanted to accuse his critics of “racial profiling,” a phrase the GOP candidate likes to use, though it’s not clear he knows what it means. Trump wanted to list the various Jewish people he knows personally.
The Washington Post added this gem of a sentence: “At one point he also swatted at a mosquito, then pretended the bug was Clinton and spoke to it.”
The Atlantic’s James Fallows, watching this spectacle unfold, wrote, “It would be rash ever to declare Peak Trump. But really, there is something wrong with this man.” MSNBC’s Chris Hayes added, “I’ve been watching these now for 13 months … and that was the most unhinged thing that I’ve seen from him. It was all over the place. It was like Charlie Sheen during his ‘Winning’ tour.”
And then it got worse.
After the event, Trump took on the role of an online troll, publishing an image from Disney with a six-pointed star, demanding to know why the media isn’t outraged by this.
This probably shouldn’t be necessary, but The New Republic’s Jeet Heer explained, “What Trump fails to realize is that the original tweet was offensive because of the context: The star was placed over money in a message about political corruption, playing to old anti-Semitic tropes about wealthy Jews controlling the political process. (It doesn’t help that the image came from an anti-Semitic message board.) None of that, of course, applies to Frozen.”

Paul Ryan wants to strip Hillary of access to classified info

Congress Republicans

You may not know this, but many people have expressed concern about Donald Trump (and his right-hand man, Paul Manfort, who works for tyrants and Russian strongmen) getting access to classified information. So for Ryan to suggest this is beyond absurd:

House Speaker Paul D. Ryan said Wednesday that Congress could step in and try to deny Hillary Clinton access to classified information during the presidential campaign, if the Obama administration doesn’t take that step itself.

Given that the FBI found Mrs. Clinton “careless” in handling top secret information, Mr. Ryan said Director of National Intelligence James Clapper should deny her the regular intelligence briefings a party’s presidential and vice presidential nominees get.

But he said if Mr. Clapper doesn’t do that, Congress could step in.

“We’re not going to forego any options,” he said — though he insisted the administration should do it “on its own.”

We Keep Books from Children and Then Blame Them For Not Reading

Happy Fourth!

This wasn’t a million years ago. This was a moment ago: The realization that the public library—idealized as a democratic place of learning and sanctuary, where the life of the mind was more ostensibly important than the color of skin—was not a haven for all was not new. As scholar Karla Holloway has written in BookMarks:… Continue reading “We Keep Books from Children and Then Blame Them For Not Reading”
