  1. The critical factor here is not what the patients pay. Its the fact that the medical industry has a monopoly and they just have to decide how much money they want to make and set the price accordingly. As long as the insurance companies can keep paying whatever the doctors and hospitals charge they will keep raising the price they charge.

    It the insurance companies the have driven the prices up, by agreeing to pay whatever they are charged (with negotiating a discount here and there for appearances sake). And why shouldn’t they, because they just charge more in turn to their customers?

  2. but the insurance companies don’t pay what the docs and hospitals charge. they set what they will pay, and the uninsured pay what the providers charge.
