I’m so confused. I thought we weren’t supposed to tip off the terrorists by talking about our programs to thwart them. Isn’t the president helping the enemy?
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush said the U.S.-led global war on terror has “weakened and fractured” al Qaeda and allied groups, outlining as proof new details about the multinational cooperation that foiled purported terrorist plans to fly a commercial airplane into the tallest skyscraper on the West Coast. Bush has referred to the 2002 plot before. In an address last October, he said the United States and its allies had foiled at least 10 serious plots by the al Qaeda terror network in the last four years, including plans for September 11-like attacks on both U.S. coasts. The White House initially would not give details of the plots but later released a fact sheet with a brief, and vague, description of each.
The president filled in details on Thursday.
As a reporter pointed out at today’s White House press conference, how was the hijacker going to fly the plane into a building if he was using a shoe bomb?
Q Scott, I wanted to just ask a follow-up about the LA plot. Is there something missing from this story, a practical application, a few facts? Because if you want to commandeer a plane and fly it into a tower, if you used shoe bombs, wouldn’t you blow off the cockpit? Or is there something missing from this story?
MR. McCLELLAN: I don’t know what you’re referring to about missing. I mean, I think we provided you a detailed briefing earlier today about the plot. And Fran Townsend, our Homeland Security Advisor, talked about it. So I’m not sure what you’re suggesting it.
Q Think about it, if you’re wearing shoe bombs, you either blow off your feet or you blow off the front of the airplane.
MR. McCLELLAN: There was a briefing for you earlier today. I think that’s one way to look at it. There are a lot of ways to look at it, and she explained it earlier today, Alexis, so I would refer you very much back to what she said, what she said earlier today.
UPDATE: The mayor of Los Angeles is shocked that no one ever thought to tell him about this alleged plot.
it is my understanding that this ‘plot’ that they uncovered had nothing to do with the SPYING but actually through our government working with other government.
they are trying to tie the 2 things together to make it look like it is b/c of their “surveillance program” when one has nothing to do with the other….

I read a comment somewhere that claimed the idea was supposedly to use the shoe-bombs to blow open the reinforced door to the cockpit(!), commendeer the plane and crash it. What’s truly pathetic is, the chances are pretty much equal that 1: BushCo pulled this idea out of their ass or 2: Some genuine Islamic terrorist pulled this idea out of their ass.

What I don’t get is why does anyone even show up for these press conferences???
I mean it seems like such a waste of everyone’s time…or better yet, they should all get up in the middle of it and walk out!
