A teacher crashes ALEC meeting

Via Diane Savitch:

Sabrina Stevens somehow got herself into a closed-door meeting of the ALEC education task force, and she told the task force how disturbed she was by what she saw. They told her that she does not “understand the process,” and it is clear in the video that there were shocked to find a live teacher and advocate for public education In their midst.

We all understand the processs. The plutocrats buy our politicians. The politicians write laws that protect the oligarchy. The oligarchy legally steals our money and illegally invents wars for us to fight in. We die or become poor and they get richer and richer. What we don’t understand is why so many people still vote for Republicans.

A good analysis, but I would make one correction:
The oligarchy writes laws that protect the oligarchy (see ALEC), and that also screw us in the process, because it’s more fun for them that way, and then have the politicians introduce those laws in legislative bodies as though they had originated them themselves, and then those politicians duly vote them into law.

i agree with both of the above assessments and wouldn’t want to be a civics teacher at this point having to lie to students or talk about how a bill USED to become law when we actually had statesmen and not corporate representatives like we have now. Similarly, how is the lobbying system taught? Where’s that in the Constitution – oh, my bad, i forgot we don’t use that anymore, since we’ve become a banana republic.
