  1. Really not surprising. The more they delve into handicap and early death among football athletes, the more they find brain injury as a major cause. I loved playing football. Fortunately(?), I blew out both knees before I could fully scramble my brain (there are some who might disagree with me there). Anyway fun game, operative word – game. Are young men’s lives worth the titillation of vicarious violence? I was never happier when my sons decided to give playing football a pass.

  2. Take away the protective gear – play it like the original sport: rugby.
    No reported brain injuries there.
    It’s MUCH harder to injure someone with your body when there’s no protective gear and chances are you’re gonna get hurt yourself.

    However, the ‘glorification of the gladiator’ goes deeper. In the US it’s brought to a whole different level somehow.
