Oh swell

USAirways is the largest carrier in Philadelphia:

Air travelers may end up losing big in a deal that would create the largest airline in the U.S., consumer advocates told The Huffington Post, after various leaks this week suggested such a merger was imminent.

Reports in the financial media Thursday and Friday noted that after months of complicated haggling, US Airways and the bankrupt parent company of American Airlines were almost ready to announce a corporate marriage.

The merger would create the largest U.S. airline by revenue, and it has been encouraged by creditors and employees in both airlines as a positive step.

But frequent flyers should be wary of the developments, according to Paul Hudson, a board member at airline consumers’ advocacy group FlyersRights.org. The deal “is unlikely to be good for consumers,” he said.

  1. Business deal in America to be bad for consumers. Not quite a shocking or even surprising headline anymore, is it?

  2. Monopolies. By law they are suppose to be illegal just like cartels. OPEC sets the price of oil and therefore the price of a gallon of gas. And a monopoly sets the price of whatever industry it dominates. The problem is that the goal of the Capitalist economic system is for one guy/gal or small group to control everything. Like the political system for example (buying the politicians). Or the money supply (FED). Or retail (Walmart). Or the airline industry. Free markets? There’s no such thing as free markets. Just like there’s no such thing as a free man or woman when they are living under the bootheel of a Capitalist economic system. USAirways….how ironic.
