What is commonly referred to as a vortex is an oscillation in the jet stream brought on by the collapse of the north atlantic conveyor. Watching the models unfold on a fifty inch HD monitor is a thing of beauty. Once you out figure out the mechanics of how it all interacts it’s really rather simple. And we can read the record and see where this has happened before.

Ten Bears, the Atlantic cyclone has helped funnel the polar circulation down to the Eastern US. Susie’s not wrong to call it a vortex, even if that’s not what weather.com is calling it this year. It’s the same pattern as the year when they were calling it that.
