  1. I’m sure everyone notices that the future, when it arrives, is always worse than the predictions?

    Well, there’s an absolute, cast iron etiquette in scientific work that you must be ‘conservative’, in the original meaning of the word. You always have to go for the least flashy predictions.

    Reality, of course, can do whatever it wants.

    So, in general, we can expect a continuous stream of this AIEEEE! news. (And it is. Very much so.) The scientists have had to lowball everything every step of the way. And the mainstream comfortable assumption has been that they were presenting midpoints.
