I remember this song from one of the early Kingston Trio albums, but had always assumed that it was from an earlier (American popular song) era. And even though it’s credited to Trio member Dave Guard, it turns out I was right–it was written by an unknown songwriter back in the thirties, and Guard just put his name on it. Full story here:
Still like the Kingston Trio’s version (though this one’s wonderful as well), but my regard for Dave Guard decreased considerably after reading the story.
