When I was covering the 2014 war on Gaza via the internet, I have to tell you, I tried really, really hard to give Israel the benefit of the doubt. Because we grew up in the time of “Exodus” and “Holocaust,” and the Israelis were the good guys, right? Time after time, the Israelis would explain no, they didn’t really commit the war crimes I saw with my own eyes, it was all a big misunderstanding. That wasn’t white phosphorus they were using on civilians, it was something else. Okay, it was white phosphorus — but they were only using it for nightime illumination! And by the time it all became achingly clear, the media had already moved on en masse to justifying the latest atrocity. But it left its mark on me, and I haven’t believed them since.
