Howard Dean’s on Press the Meat with Tubby Tim. He just smacked him down after Tubby threw up a Pew survey saying that Dean supporters were more secular and liberal than most Democrats.
Howard said the methodology was in question, because it was an internet survey. And then he started swinging: “I’m a committed Christian, and I’m not going to have other people tell me how I should or shouldn’t be a Christian. That’s my personal business, and I’m not going to have these Pharisees tell me what to do.” (He also referred to those who were pointing out the mote in his eye instead of taking it out of their own.)
Good answer.
UPDATE: Here’s the transcript. Crooks and Liars has a clip.

Good catch! And even better catch for the Big Dean. Sometimes I wonder if these “Clearly Labeled Xtians” even read the words of their main man. That part about all the conspicuous praying being a *Bad Thing*. The “go into your closet and pray privately” piece. Incredible forward looking humor on the closet thing (it meant a private place at the time of the translation) but that aside, can you imagine these types making any kind of communication with the Deity without a press release? Not to mention the flagellation of the money changers.
The bible beater’s treatment of the bible reminds me of Moyers comment on Mao’s Little Red Book in the bureaucratic China of the day. “Conspicuous, omnipresent and unread.”
It definitely is a good answer. I was impressed with most of the interview, though I do have to say I’m getting tired of Russert always trying to pull stupid shit. He’s getting worse and worse as the years go on.
woowoo!
I just love it when HoHo goes all rightous on the thugs.
He would have beaten Bush.
Smackdown is right. Way to go Howard. More like this, please:)
The Repubs keep forgetting, or maybe they never knew, but we Dems petitioned the DMC to elect Howard Dean. As much as we all would have loved having Kerry as President, we lost because no one would stand up to Bush. Well, Dean would, and did. Today on MTP he was magnificent! We need him to call a spade a spade, and never look back. The day of worrying about offending soccer moms is long gone.
it’s difficult to imagine lil russ being anywhere near logical and impossible to
imagine the doctor putting up with lil russ’ nonsense…the clown show of sunday morning is never getting any better get used to it…
We just put up a clip from MTP at

Yeah Howard! It’s time to get Bolivian on their ass. Maybe the spirit of George Galloway will possess a few timid Democratic souls. The time to stand up and push back is now!
It’s been all downhill for him since his guest appearance as Det. Russert’s cousin on Homicide: Life on the Street.
Dean represents what a true Democrat should be, informed, feisty, not backing down when confronted. Now do you see why the Repugs were so afraid he would be the candidate? He’d of whipped Bush’s sorry ass around the block. He might not have won, but he’d have gained respect for the Democratic party.
Meanwhile, over at dailykos, there are always those who still don’t get it about what a piece of shit Kerry was, and INSIST that Dean would have lost just as badly as Kerry did, if not worse, if he had been the nominee.
A lot of “Democrats” are just so fucking dense, it irks me to no end.
I love Dean. Damn, I wish he had been our nominee. Kerry was a disaster — and now he wants to fuck us again in 2008.
No way Kerry’s coming out as the nominee in 2008.
Dean lied. The Pew poll that found his base to be more secular, affluent, white and liberal than the Democratic Party was not an “Internet Poll.”
Click on my name for details.
Politus, you don’t get it. Because all I want Dean to do is what the Republicans have done so successfully: Jab his fingers in their eyes as often as possible, and fall to the floor screaming “foul” at the top of his voice when anyone says anything at all critical about us.
You know, like professional wrestling. Because after all, that’s what it’s come down to. The Republicans understand that and rarely miss a trick.
Democrats like you seem to think this is about the “facts.” Explain to me again how facts are so effective in winning elections… Facts are for when we’re in power again and making policy. This is about the politics of show business.
I mean, think about it. Look at all the energy you just put into attacking and undercutting the - so far - popular and effective head of the DNC. You’d be hard pressed to find a Republican doing that. That’s why they’re in control - and we’re not.
Harry S Truman said “When they start praying too loudly over in the prayer corner, you’d better go home and lock your henhouse.” I think Governor Dean may be channeling President Harry.
I love Howard Dean.
Actually Politus, it was. It was conducted towards his advisors, and close activists.
Facts will not see you free, frames will. If you read a particular book, you would know exactly what I am talking about.
The Republicans are taken aghast by Dean’s honesty, it is like something hit them. They try to keep on saying the party of Roosevelt and Kennedy has become the party of Howard Dean. Which I find to be a little odd because Republicans are quoted as saying that they hated the policies of the FDR and the Kennedy Administrations.
I like Dean and think he’s in a great role now at DNC but I can’t help but wonder at the Dean presidential supporters who want to attack other democrats who don’t feel their passion for the man.
He was able to attract a lot of very dedicated democrats but not enough to get the nomination. There are any number of reasons why but there are few of them that need rehashing in order to attack other democrats.
Unless of course the polls are now counting an individual’s passion instead of their vote.
Politus —
The Pew survey was limited to internet activists.
If you polled only internet activists for any Republican you would also get a population that was more affluent and more secular — and also MUCH more libertarian — than the voting population in general.
esmense-
That is not what Howie said. He blamed the poll for allowing participants to not answer, not for having its survey sheet online.
But your point is well made. However, the point of the poll was not to get a balanced cross-section of all voters; it was to get a snapshot of Dean activists. Since Dean’s campaign bragged that it had revolutionized political fundraising and organizing by making it web-based, it makes sense to conduct the poll by harvesting names from Dean’s email list.
Remember… when Howie wanted to get “permission” from his supporters to be the first Democrat to ever exceed the CFR spending limits, he sent out a blast email. He didn’t do a phone poll…
Not to be a prick or anything, but the quote goes something like ‘remove the beam from your own eye’ before pointing out the mote in another’s.
Dean should be complimented for his performance. Most of these christers like the old testament, anyway, and it has no appeal for me at all.
It’s pathetic that this country has fallen to the point where a politician feels he has no choice but to kiss the ass of X-tians.
Is there an atheist in any position of power in the entire government?
Too much parsing, folks. Let’s just make sure that Howard slams media jerks like Russert when necessary and who cares if he goes ballistic? We need someone to rip the Republican nut jobs in shreds, and I agree a few eye pokes is not only called for but essential. Also, a few kicks in the nuts won’t hurt either! We need to make sure that Bolton gets slapped around, slam Bush’s Iraq policy relentlessly, and attack the Repubs on the nuke option at every turn. Enough of being wimps, time to break out the brass knuckles and brawl!
Politus you are confused. The poll was an internet poll. It was all conducted by e-mail over the internet.
Paradolex, when was it that Christians were not the majority in this country? Nothing has changed.
Wow.
The simple fact that you morons really think Howard Dean was anything but incoherent and full of shit on Meet the Press makes me believe, more than ever, that Ol’ Howie is Rove’s best creation yet.
You people are hilarious.

“we lost because no one would stand up to Bush.”
NONSENSE. WE DID NOT LOSE.
The election was stolen — Bush did NOT win Ohio.
When you stop spreading false myths about John Kerry’s successful campaign for President, then we can get on with the task of repairing the 30 states that no longer have recount rights. ‘Trust us’ is not good enough.
As for ‘hilarious’ — no one here allows their wife to tell the world he masturbates stallions to make the press laugh.
Does Kerry still have a ‘right’ to the 15 mil that he kept after the election? If he runs in 08 - will he be able to use this - surely it is the Dems money- if he ain’t our man, then he has to give up the dough?
Oh, GrownUp, how grown-up your idiotic taunting is! YOU are hilarious!
Go fuck yourself, and take that “Yoosta-bee” asshole Thompson with you. Who cares what that fucking sell-out thinks. Like Dennis Miller and Ron Silver, he’s another gutless wonder who is so shell-shocked by 9/11 that he sold out his idealogical friends. Pussies. It’s like living under MADD never happened to the bedwetters of the right.
(Cue typical ‘winger fainting spell about profanity.)
Click on the post by the simpering “GROWNUP” above if you want to read a case study on how to be self-deluded and incoherant.
is that how a grownup talks?
re “Remember… when Howie wanted to get “permissionâ€? from his supporters to be the first Democrat to ever exceed the CFR spending limits, he sent out a blast email. He didn’t do a phone poll…”
that’s false. they used email and automated phone calls with voicemail-like tree voting to reach as many supporters as possible.
I enjoyed the interview, just because Gov. Dean is good on TV. It is refreshing to hear someone reply to questions on the fly and to do it in complete, coherent sentences without saying “Uhm, uh, well…IRAQ, war president!” so many times it has to be edited out of the transcript to make the transcript legible.
I honestly am not worried about the mote in the eye/log in the eye “controversy”. I think knowledge of the Bible is pretty low on the list of what is needed to run the last remaining (for now) superpower. (sorry, wishful thinking on my part)
